FIFA World Cup 2026

In a few days, the world will be busy for a month drinking beer, shouting at every ball hitting the goal post, and some will even suffer a heart attack because they thought they could play better than Mbappé! Welcome to the world's greatest tournament, where billions of us will root for our favorite teams even if our nations have been left out.

Here are some fun facts for all you football lovers. If you are in the US, then you can call it soccer, but for the rest of us, it is plain old football, and that's the way it should be. But of course, the Americans like to do it differently from the rest of the world.

The 2026 tournament is the largest one in history, with 48 teams getting a chance to play some football. We have a tri-nation host: the US, Canada, and Mexico. It's summer, and the football players will probably lose a few pounds in the heat as well.

While the previous World Cups had 64 matches, we will have a record 104 matches this time around. I think FIFA just wants to make more money because they are not satisfied with the billions they have in their vault. More matches mean more TV revenue, and most of it goes to FIFA and not the host nations.

Don't be surprised if FIFA comes up with a year-long tournament in the future and a 96-team format by 2042! FIFA has always been plagued with corruption, and it seems that many of the folks who run the football associations in their respective countries are either politicians or shady figures, and that includes our ANFA as well!

The 2026 tournament will last 39 days, so it will be almost 40 days of talking about football and only football for billions of folks around the world. This time, we have teams divided into 12 groups with 4 teams each. And the knockout stage begins with 32 teams instead of the 16 we have been used to since the Big Bang!

Shakira is still around, and I think she will be presenting us the World Cup song till she hits 80. Let's hope Snoop Dog throws in a line or two somewhere as well, since he is the unofficial sports ambassador of the country.

The Champion of this year's World Cup will have to play 8 matches, and Mexico City will be hosting the opening match. The Final will be held in the US on 19th July! But for most of us here in Asia, this World Cup will not be much fun because the matches start early in the morning, and I think productivity will go down drastically in Asia for a month!

The official song for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is "Dai Dai," performed by global superstar Shakira and Nigerian artist Burna Boy. From Waka Waka to Dai Dai, Shakira will be singing in the 2030 World Cup as well, when Morocco, Portugal, and Spain do their hosting stuff, but the inaugural opening matches will be held in Montevideo (Uruguay), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Asunción (Paraguay) to commemorate the first World Cup in 1930!

Messi and Ronaldo are probably playing in their last World Cup. Messi already has the winner's medal, but I feel sorry for Ronaldo. God works in mysterious ways and I think he or she has already decided that only one Ronaldo (Brazil) is enough and doesn't want this Ronaldo (Portugal) to get the final and the most coveted trophy for any footballer!
