The 2026 FIFA World Cup should be remembered for fair competition, not controversy.

On July 1, 2026, U.S. striker Folarin Balogun received a red card during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulting in an automatic suspension for the next match under the tournament rules. However, after President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the decision, FIFA allowed Balogun to play in the Round of 16 match against Belgium. This decision has raised serious questions about consistency, fairness, and the integrity of the competition.

Whether one believes the original red card was correct or not, the rules of football must be applied equally to every team. No nation, player, or political leader should receive special treatment. The credibility of FIFA depends on impartiality, transparency, and equal enforcement of its regulations.

Sport should be decided by the players on the field—not by political influence or personal relationships. Morality, ethics, and respect for the rule of law are essential to preserving the integrity of international football. If FIFA expects every nation to trust its disciplinary process, then those rules must be applied consistently, without favoritism or the appearance of political interference.

Every team competing in the World Cup deserves a level playing field. Fairness is the foundation of sport, and it must never be compromised.
