This video is a must watch for every student and teacher in Nepal for Dr. Gautam has been there and seen it all from schools and colleges in Nepal to world-renowned Harvard University.

why is it a must watch? i do not find this impressive. except he made some money and fame i don't see what he contributed back. reality is, he fled away for personal gains. mahabir puns, vagaban koiralas, rabindra mishras, and so on should be the real heroes. i hope that i too will be able to follow the path they have shown.

My thoughts: Partially true. What's false - "working in an academic setting and making money". that too in research". The Biostatiscian do make tons of money doing "consulting". Harvard is pretty notorious for "not paying". I have first hand experience of working in an university. :-(

Here we agree.
Why Mr shiva has to do the same posting multiple times?
Yeah the name and posting could mean "self propogation" or "self propaganda" so Mr Shiva - if you are a different person, my suggestion would be - not to over do ! Thanks for the interview though.
If you are the same Dr. Shiva Gautam - no suggestions -you are wise enough.
If you are reading - stop him. There are at least four same posts.

shirish could possibly be true about the money making. but isn't the guy in medical research? at least human/medical research has a lot more money poured in than my plant sector...tempts me to get a md-phd but again, i haven't envisioned a bright future of medical research in nepal. that's why i chose plants..as soon as i get my phd, if nothing more, i can go back and teach scientific, systematic farming, and if possible, be a sarkari maadsaab... ...jilla jilla gayo, kisaan harulai bhetyo, new methods sikaayo...that sounds more exciting than being a harvard lab rat

Bhikhari, Harvard is in financial troubles and like most of the universities, Harvard also reducing the"tenured track" positions into "contract" type of positions. I don't know the salary level of an Associate Professor like Dr Shiva Gautam - so its hard to say how much he makes but like I said before Harvard is pretty stingy about "paying" its staff. I know few people who volunteer at "Harvard" for names sake (I guess). Regarding research: The university (I do not exactly know how much Harvard's overhead is) takes away as much as 75% of the total money you bring in. Suppose you bring in a million dollar grant, the university might take away 750 000 dollars and you will have to manage the staff and supplies etc with the remaining money. Once you are in Salary it does not really matter how many grants you bring in. You get the same salary. As far as I know, apart from teaching responsibilities, the biostatiscians work closely with the researchers for desining the study (like determining the power), analyzing the data etc of the researches and are paid in the salary. He is a biostatiscian - not a "lab rat".
