Nepali learned of cricket so much from India that it might as well be the national game of india! Lighten up now will you? You get the gist though right? Where did Nepalis learn of cricket from? Guess what? Indians want Cricket to be their national game. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/cricket-not-hockey-as-indias-national-game/60905-5.html

India being our neighboring country does not mean that Nepal learned Cricket from India. Their progress in world cricket might be some influence for development of Cricket in our country but that i would not agree NEPAL LEARNED CRICKET FROM INDIA..

Haku the black you are deny it but the reality is that our uncles and fathers started watching Cricket in Indian TV Doordarshan. I remember my uncles watching doordarshan cricket in black and white TV lol. If you don't think it was from india where do you think it was from? Maybe from the British when they were ruling india..

@sajha Onion,
Don't come back and say Cricket is national game of England. Indians learned cricket from Britons. Do you know when? Long time ago. Indians would jump when white crooks hit the ball with a piece of wood. Do you know when? Again long time ago.

Sajha Onion, I am not saying that India does not have any influence on Nepal, I am saying it is not the only reason. I assume you prolly know that Cricket originally started from England and the Royal family who went abroad to England to study had some part to create an environment to play cricket in Nepal after they came back, I guess that is even before our uncle started watching Doordarshan in Black and white TV?

I agree that some gentlemen close to royal family like Keyur Shamsher, Pilot Bobby Shah, a person called D.N Thapa (actually my father too, who was a leg spinner; he had learnt cricket while his stay at Banaras) did play together some forty years ago in Tudikhel and they might have learnt it during their stay overseas, presumably England. But like onion said, we'd be whistling dixie if we believe that we Nepalese learnt cricket watching Andy Roberts bowl or Don Bradman bat. I still vividly remember cricketers at tudikhel and lainchour used to idolize Mohinder Amarnath and Sunil Gavaskar when I heard them gossipping. Cable television came later, much later, and before doordarshan there were avid Nepalese cricket lovers who were glued to their transistor. Not trying to argue here, just stating the fact.

Reminds me of my mama shree wearing his dhoti and screaming chaukaa and chakka watching India vs. Pakistan matches. I think it's fair to say we associate cricket with India more than any other country.

When british used to play cricket in India, my grandfather used to watch it from the top of the mountain in Janakpur. He then ask my grandma to bowl and he hit chakka at the very first ball. This is how cricket originated in nepal. hats off to my Grandpa and Grandma.

Please accept my humble FU to all the mofos who just want to roll over and call someone else's culture superior just because we pray to the same names, eat same spices, have similar cultural BS and defecate same yellowish shit.... According to you mofos....the Americans and the British should be rolling over to each other as well because they both wear similar clothes and eat the same bread and meat menu and watch the same movies. Guess what....A Brit gets offended when mistaken for American and an American is offended when mistaken for a Brit. In the very same way i am offended when i am being called an Indian....and an Indian would definitely not like to be called Nepali either. And those who worship Bollywood have simply no respect for art. There is a reason why the industry gets a name that rhymes with Hollywood. It is because ...they are a copy cat cheaters. All the industries that rhyme with bollywood are THIEF industries. They steal ideas, content, material and more. Movie industry in France, Northern Europe, Korea, Japan, and even China does not rhyme with Bollywood because they CREATE their own content. I Dont watch Hindi movie because they offend me. Bollywood movie is offensive to anyone who has reasonable intelligence as the movie is made for uneducated Rikshaw Pullers only. And to dance on those cheap songs on your traditional ceremony like Dashain, Tihar, and Wedding is disgusting.

sidster "I Dont watch Hindi movie because they offend me. Bollywood movie is offensive to anyone who has reasonable intelligence as the movie is made for uneducated Rikshaw Pullers only" @ sidster, . I work in D.C. And couple weeks ago, one of my co-worker, she is French, made a plan with all other co-workers in the office to go to see movie "Dhoom". Of course, we did. When we all went to see that movie after work on that Friday, there were bunch of other people also waiting outside the door of that movie theater. By any means, they don't look "RISKSHAW PULLERS" at all. They all work for Federal govt, law firms, you name it. Since you're that smart then why the Regal, AMC movie companies play Hindi movies every weekend in US. Then the CEOs' of those companies are stupid to spend thousands dollars to buy Bollywood movies and put in theater to show Rishaw Pullers. We don't even have Rikshaw Pullers in US.

@sexy sari Nope, ceo's aren't stupid, they are way smarter. It's $$$ earning business, running 'dhoom' would have earned them better than any other Hollywood movies. It's a business. They can even show Russian movies for $$$.

If I were to make a blatantly explosive and controversial statement like this, I would at least check to make sure that the facts are straight rather than come in later and say "Oh you know what I meant! Come on guys!, (wink* wink* nod* nod*)"
Maybe you should stick to your god given gift of comedy, Mr. Onion.
Also, I can turn your argument on its head by just reversing it.
Aaru bela Bharitiya bistarbad ka birodh garni haru, bharat na man paraune haru biswa kai popular Bollywood movie heri kina bharitiya actor/actress lai pujchan? Kina Bollywood movie ko geet haru ma nachda hunn?
You get the gist though, right?

Sari Girl, Bollywood movie is like a Indian Street food. It is not healthy and it can possibly give you nausea and diarrhea but being said that i think it is still okay to have a craving for the "street food" every now and then. But knowing that it is just a street food and not a regular meal is important and understanding that it is a big NO NO for Wedding, Dashain, and Tihar celebrations are even more important. Now, i am pretty sure the French woman does not replace her French movies with the Bollywood movies and she is not going to play Salman Khan songs during her Christmas celebration. She likes the taste of the trash every now and then but she knows its not good enough than her own stuff. Most Bollywood movies make majority of their Karods from the Rikshaw pullers. There are 300 million Rikshaw pullers alike folks in India and they contribute to your favorite bollywood lifestyle.

Sajha guru, in case you did not notice this was supposed to provide comic relief and nothing else. Unfortunately just like comment above about some hindi movies being directed towards Rikshaw Pullers, my sense of comedy will not be understood by Rikshaw Pullers. Jai Nepal.

Sidster,
I thought you were better than that brother. With that being said I never reply to threads like these which suddenly go south the moment someone mentions India no matter what the context is (thanks to some jingoists), but since there were some questions about how Nepalese cricket came into existence, I just shared my view.
But after coming across your reply where you were kind enough to call us names, which I sincerely believe was uncalled for and you could have done without, let me chip in few of my pennies.
I do not consider Indians have the superior culture, but our custom, practices and system of beliefs align closely and I do not see any harm in embracing theirs. And that is what most people involuntarily do and make someone like you think it is offensive. Alike you I am against mainstream Bollywood movies that make little sense to me, but there are many a good ones which haters (is it safe to say 'like you'???) do not think exist. Also there are many who go watch mainstream movies just because they want to escape, not to appreciate art, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Again, it is also a matter of personal choice as well, just because we listen to Hindi music and watch Bollywood movies do not make us lesser Nepalese. Now if you ask me what I personally believe in, let me go out on a limb and say for what it’s worth – the reason I watch Bollywood movies is because Nepalese movie industry is still at its infancy, Rajesh Hamal’s acting makes me weep and Haribansha’s subpar jokes make me climb the wall. You can argue Haribansha’s jokes are original, but I will, anyday choose a witty run of the mill humor that makes me laugh than an idiotic creative joke that makes me leave town.
Peace.
