Hi Friends, I saw one News in Today's Kantipur,You can read the news. This News talk about How Ranas lotted our country and how they are still enjoying the fruits of Such loot Happily.More than 50 percent Nepalis are too poor even to maintain their basic requirements and these Ranas and sahas can go for african safaris for months. Those all money comes either from loot conducted by their ancestors or from state treasurey.I HOPE ONE DAY THE MOMENT WILL COME WHEN ALL THE ILLEGAL AND ILL-GOTTEN PROPERTY OF THESE LOOTERS WILL BE NATIONALISED ANDm DISTRIBUTED AMONG POOR NEPALIS............I hope that the day will come soon.

Ranas hunt for ancestral treasures

BY SURENDRA PHUYAL

NEW DELHI, Feb 24 - Several descendents of the Ranas are dusting off old documents from their 'sanduks' and shelves and are arriving in India for treasure hunting. Like the descendent of Chandra Shumsher [1901-1929] who hunted shares, debentures and assets worth nearly Indian Rs 10 million five years ago, most of them are succeeding too.

Dating back to the reign of the East India Company that ended in 1947, influential Nepali rulers, governors, their relatives, 'Bhai-bhardars' had invested millions and millions of rupees -- in shares, debentures, bank accounts and prime assets such as real estate and properties -- in India. And many of them, documents obtained by the Post reveal, have succeeded in reclaiming valuable assets and properties.

The Chandra Shumsher offspring [who wants to remain anonymous], for instance, started the treasure hunt in 1995. It all started after the a Delhi assets tracer, Jiwan Lal, found annual reports of several Indian companies -- more than half of them cease to exist today -- at his Jawalakhel residence. An enquiry was held with 24 companies that existed and "19 companies confirmed that the [Rana's] shares were still there," says the young Rana.

He's not alone. The offspring of Bir Shumsher [1885-1901] became successful in reclaiming shares and "back dividends" from 40 out of the 60 companies in India, following of course, the labyrinthine process of succession. That starts with the acquisition of a succession certificate from the high court in the area.

And it's definitely worth it. In all, the Bir Shumsher descendent reclaimed 12 million Indian rupees from the companies' shares and dividends. "After selling all his shares, today he's living happily in Kathmandu," say Jiwan Lal. "He's leading a luxurious life like many of his forefathers."

Since 1994, Jiwan Lal's firm has already helped nearly a dozen Nepalis -- most of them descendents of Rana Prime Ministers [who ruled Nepal between 1846 -1950] or their close aides such as Shahs, Thapas, Acharyas, Dixits, Joshis, Manandhars and Shresthas -- reclaim treasures "illegally siphoned away" by their rich and (in)famous forefathers.
Consider these historical facts:

*Around 1850, the 'Great Rana Prime Minister' Junga Bahadur Rana established a national treasury and deposited Rs 110 million. That treasury was indiscriminately exploited. His successor Chandra Shamsher extracted 45 million rupees on two separate occasions. Bhim Shamsher [1829-1932] exploited part of that. Later, Juddha Shamsher [1932-1945] collected a large sum of donations following the 1934 earthquake - again to exploit.

*Around that time, the wage of an unskilled laborer was just Rs 0.02 and that of an artist was Rs 0.48.

*Chandra Shamser had offered Rs 800,000 in cash, silver equivalent to Rs 2.5 million, cardamom equivalent to the sum of Rs 40,000, tea leaves equivalent to 84,699 pounds, 2 hundred jackets, 12 long coats and 220 saal trees to the British rulers around the time of World War I.

*A portion of loan was however returned after World War I [1914-1918] during Chandra Shumser's reign. After that secret deal, Chandra Shumsher distributed Rs. 90,000,000 in pure silver to each of his 9 sons, and a separate amount ranging from 20 to 40 million 'silver rupees' to each of his four surviving brothers.

*The last Rana Prime Minister Mohan Shamsher migrated to Bangalore in South India, where his palatial bungalow has been turned into a museum today. Rana Prince-turned Nepali Congress leaders Subarna Shamsher and Mahavir Shamsher inherited prime properties in Kolkata. They also owned India's first private airline, Himalayan Aviation, around the 1940s. The aircraft were also used to distribute pamphlets before 1950.

Historians (Pramod SJB Rana, Dhundi Raj Bhandari, M.P. Shrestha) conclude that the Ranas and their 'Bhai-bhardars' made investments in India because much of what they owned was ill-gotten. Things started changing after democracy came to Nepal in 1950 [Falgun 7, when King Tribhuvan returned home ending his brief exile in India]. Even so their legacy remains.

And the investors were far-sighted, too. "The Chandra Shamsher offspring, for example, continues to boast an 1852 East Indian Company debenture certificate with a face value of IRS 5,000," says Jiwan Lal. "Recently, somebody at the London Auction House offered IRS 800,000 for that, but he didn't sell it."

Currently, Jiwan Lal's firm is studying some old documents produced by a Rana and a Shrestha family, respectively. The first one -- a register, dated April 1958 -- talks about a sum total investment of IRS 169,130 in several pre-1947 Indian jute mills and tea estates. The second one -- a note book believed to have been maintained in the early 1950s -- talks about clearance of IRS 426,000 plus as tax and penalty to the Indian government.

"If this guy paid so much tax way back in the '50s he could have been a multi-billionare by now," he says, seated in his north Delhi home-cum-office. But the problem is this: much of such ancient properties and investments in India have been nationalized by the post-1947 governments.

The third most interesting bounty-hunting success story involved a Juddha Shumsher offspring from one of his house-maids-turned wife, or the "C" grade Rana. He acquired nearly Indian 8 million rupees. "He's in Kathmandu these days happy and spending time playing Bridge."

Dude, Maobadi started this all the things because first Ranas, after that sahas and Thapas and Panchs looted this country for more than 140 years. Due to that, our country is 250 years back. Why donot u notice that?
I am not defending maoists. Maoist have done a lot of looting but for fighting against state and they want after their victory, nationalisation of these big dudes' ranas and sahas property. why do not u notice that?
If maoists can do that, i think their loot in the present situation is worth justifying but Ranas 's loot is never justified..................
Can u notice that?

1who,
I noticed, Maoists are the main cause of economic slugging, crime, and destruction of human needs at the contemporary age. We read only in a book about Rana's looting, but we don't take action against present Ranas just because of their grate grand parents did looting. Your parents could be worst, you can be a great Nepali to do good job for the nation. The same way today's Rana teaches to people not doing looting. Let's say, if your great grand dad married with 4 women, now you hate to do that, and teach people not coping the same way ..........

MONARCHISTS are the main cause of economic sluggishness, crime, and destruction of human needs of every age. Before it was Ranas. Since 1950s Shahas. What's the difference? We are monkeys. We shall continue doing our antics regardless.

i did an extensive independent reaseach on the rana rule of nepal during my Isc for a project to get admitted to a college. Rana's contribution to nepal cannot be forgotten with the Bir Hospital, Muluki Ain, and Administrative procedure modernization. However, with the creation of Feudal society - Kaji in the hills and chaudhari in the plains, (i guess you all know about feudal system), Ranas bilked enough wealth enough for many many generations (i can't even imagine how many). The way they did was, all the lands was owned by the landlords, and then there are workers, and all the production was taxed. The farmer worked for certain amount of production off the field (called Adya). the land lord in turn had to give certain amount (called lagaan) to the state. The government used some and whatever is left over went to the Prime Minister. For Lamjung and Kaski, everything went to the prime minister. For every man sent to the British Army, the PM got 1500 pounds per person. Over 15000 in WWI and over 45000 people were sent to the British Army in WWII. When Chandra Shamsher passed away.. his will for his 9 legitimate childred were 90 million rupees each. With 2% interest or inflation per annum over the last 70 years or so, it is equivalent to 3.5 billion rupees in current money. Now that is some wealth...

I am not saying that the grand parents of Notorious ranas should be shot in tundikhel. What i am saying is the ill gotten money of such ranas be nationalised and that property is in the hand of present generation of rana families............A Rana who inherited illegal money and invested in mobile company .what great he did????????? that he did at the cost of national fund and NTC.I think u people know about that which we are discussing in next thread in Sajha................Yes, Some Ranas did some good jobs of setting up Hospitals and Making Laws like Muluki Aiin.................But what good they did is miniscule of what bad they did...........I think this fundamental fact can not be overlooked before arguing in this forum..........I am not saying that all the ranas looted our country but majority did that and such looted property can not go to the hands of their grandchildren alone that should go to the national fund........................I am not talking here Rana in terms of caste. So, there is no point of cursing Bahuns alone so long as rai, damai(with all the respect), newar, gurung come forward to participate in nation building...........My all the Rai limbu frens believe army in honkong and British army and Indian army is better and more prestigious than public services in Nepal..............so, automatically such administrative posts goes on the hands of bahun and chhetris...........Please let's not colourise this thread to caste cursing or something like that...............

when nepal became a democratic country in 2007 BS, Nepal was still the same as 1904 BS, with addition of only one school, one sanskrit school, one hospital and ... can't think of anything else but i do know, that many men and none of the women outside the valley and some cities, were educated, becasue PM Jung said, they don't have to study. they don't need to study. how stupid.. but quite smart to get selfrich, becaues later day Ranas said, if common nepalese were allowed to study, they would be smart enough to get rid of the Ranas. Oh! I hate them so much... I wish they never existed especially Jung Bahadur Rana, even though he is the most fascinating character of the history of Nepal and I love the way he lived. In fact, he is the only good Rana Prime Minister, because he eaned the title with his own talents and breavey and actually opened the doors of Nepal to modernization as oppose to the Shamshers. He wanted the brothers to become PM and sons to become Shree 3. But Bir and Khadga and Chandra and siblings killed everyone in the Jung's family, including yound Nati Jarnel (Jung's and Surendra's grandson) in Kalimati... thus began the dark fate of the country in 1949 BS, with Bir, Chandra, Juddha, Padma and Mohan. I excluded Dev, because he was ousted by Chandra because Dev was jeopardizing the hereditary rule of the family. Padma was exiled because he wanted to give constitution. I am thankful to Juddha for creating the ABC classes and fight within the family but will never forgive him for taking the $$ off Pashupatinath to pay off the debts of everyone in the valley after the great earthquake. Well we also had our first martyr during his time...

We knew about the real cause of death of Gagan Singh only after the death of Jung Bahadur Rana... I guess we'll have to wait a few to know the real events of Royal Palace 2001.. just a thought.. nothing against anyone...

Jung Bahadur was very very very religious.. he took cows from his private shed on his voyage to England (yes they were shipped along with the Rajaha of Nepal, as he was known), including his private chefs (ate cooked food by Brahmin only)... Rana Prime ministers were titularly Rajah of nepal by the British during thier protectorate era between 1851 and 1923. Englsih Post Office officially released stamps of six rajah's of the British Raj in the sub-continent that included one that of PM Chandra Shamsher JBR. During this period Nepal was like modern day Bhutan. also, 12 Model T's were carried by Bhariya's into the valley during the early days of Chandra. you see, Chandra was crazy... he build Singha Durbar to stable his horses... and arrested Gehendra Shamsher when he showed his newly invented machine gun (well, as we know the smartness of the Chandra, the first nepalese to complete matriculation, we have only one home made machine gun till date - the original Gehendra invention. This is like, we only have the incandacent light made by Edison, the only artificial light in the world) he also ordered to chop the hands of the one who sculpted the shrine of Palachok Bhagwati

It is not the question here whether Jang Bahadur was religious or not..............I am talking about corruption of ranas and Bhai Bhardar and masti of their ancestors at the cost of Poor People of Nepal...........What u guys think about Nationalisation of Their property, Even the property of Gynendra and Birendra?????????
England sucked India via colonisation and Ranas and Shahs Sucked Nepal by estabilishing autocracy Regime..........England left India but God knows when These ranas and Shahs will leave Nepal????????????

1whocandie4you,
I totally agree you with.
No one should be allowed to inherit his ancestor's ill-earned wealth period. All the ill-earned wealth should be nationalized and should be put to use for the benifit of people.

I do not think any of those Ranas did any good for Nepal. One school, one college and one hospital in course of 104 years??? I do not call it good.

When the countries around us were ruled by British and Japansese we were free. We could have done whatever we wanted as a country. While all other free nations took sail in industrial revolution out country was left behind in darkness.

We cannot undo what's already done but we can take the lesson from the past. I have never believed in monarchy. How can a person have birth right to be a head of state?
Look at what happend in the past, Rana Bahadur, Surendra and Rajenadra all of them were psycho kings. Now we have Gyanendra and Paras accumulating as much wealth as possible so that they can live luxurious life even if they have to live in exile.

let's see what happens.

The reason is Bahuns do not stick to the principle... principles for them is made of rubber!!! And that's why all their deeds are causing trouble to general nepalese.
