I am not aware of the facts etc but let me put forth whatever i know in this regard
1.Kulekhani option: I forgot the name of the engineer, should be Indra ... as i mentioned above. He has an article in the journal TECHNOLOGY, published by Pulchowk campus (yr. 2000 issue i guess). If you get a chance to grab that article, he has provided monumental evidences that Kulekhani far outweighs Melamchi. He used to work in Khanepani dept (?? or corp???) at panipokhari.

2. Trisuli option: I have not calculated the costs. But given the geographic vicinity of Trishuli, its just a thought- an option. I meant to say that it might be. The focus of my argument was that as Melamchi is being highlighted as "the only solution", I am arguing that there might be other options as well and merely lossing Melamchi does not require giving up all the hopes. Furthermore, Trishuli definitely can provide a larger discharge than Melamchi would. As far as I know, the water-demand taken into regard currently is considering household use for a developing country etc but lets say Kathmandu prospers and we will need water as in the developed countries (e.g. per capita >200 lpd), in that case, we will again have to find other sources beside Melamchi. I am aware there are annexation options to Melamchi as well but I believe a regulated Trisuli will always pose better than an off-the-river Melamchi.

3. Fair use: I am not saying Kathmandu should be neglected. I am saying that while fulfilling Kathmandu, rest of the country should not be looted. I have heard from friends (my field is in structures and as such, i dont have much first-hand knowledge on what is going on in water resources sector in nepal), melamchi project will draw almost all of the water and will leave significant environmental impacts. Drying up of a river does not only mean immediate effect to the dependent "paddy" farmers but also effects to the ground water system, land, eco-system etc. My focus is: in any case, whether Melamchi or Trisuli or whatever, priority should be given to arrest/harvest of monsoon rainwater and thus regulating reservoirs rather than run-off-the-river types.

4. Distro: Thats good to hear because the distribution system is a real mirage in Ktm. And I am sorry beforehand for any info that I might have said for I donot have any first-hand knowledge. All I know is thro friends. But I am skeptical at whether the practice of hiking prices or letting off of corrupt criminals under the SOLE DIRECTION of ADB, as always in the past, will ever realize that goal. To requote 'hulaki bajey': "we should stop being Gurkhas anymore." ADB is there to invest and they kind-of want projects to lengthen, and kind-of crippled so that they can invest more and maintain their grip, its MY point of view of ADB and WB and IMF and alike. I beg to differ on this if anyone does not like it.

5. D/S: One of the things I meant to say was pollution when I mentioned "inept water management in Ktm". The other point was, as most ppl agree, the discharge in Bagmati has significantly reduced regardless of how much water is domestically consumed in Kathmandu. I have heard ppl saying that over the 2 decades, the discharge in Bagmati has gone down by more than half.

Again, let me stress all of this was in GOOD FAITH for sake of a technical discussion. I fully acknowledge that I might be just one of- right or wrong, but not both, at the same time :)

let me give you the name of a prominent resource person for the hazardous d/s effect on Bagmati due to inept water management- Dr. Jit Narayan Nayak (IOE). He has a cabinet-full of documentation of research and studies, for sure.

I just want to add some points in this discussion. We need good water source for KTM whether it is Melamchi or sth. else. But the another problem in KTM is its rapidly increasing population. If this is not controlled well, situation will be same even if Melamchi comes and distribution system is reformed. It is a matter of discussion about how to control KTM population. But improving infrastructure outside KTM will be one option so that newcoming people will choose somewhere else to reside. Government can encourage new educational institutes, hospitals to be opened outside KTM by giving them certain incentives. On the other hand, land purchase, new construction etc. inside KTM (at least inside ringroad) should be strictly controlled and planned.

In Kathmandu, Drinking Water will not available from development projects unless corruption and crimes eliminate or reduce in very very minimum level (uncounted level).

Even drinking water will provide without stop crimes and corruption, water might not be drinkable or clean. We are talking about millions ton water for thousand years.

For Melamchi drinking water project, million ton water need to be collect that means require huge water dam. Water must supply that means it needs thousand iron and concrete pipeline with secure system. Water follow and supply must be control that means we need automated control system. Water must be clean and drinkable that means water must be filter and purify by chemically and mechanically. We need to build at least rough infrastructure for that project.

Conclusion is that:

First of all, Nepal does not have ability to do alone. China, Japan, Korea or European countries must do for Nepal.

If World Bank or Asia Development bank only gives money to Nepal for Melamchi project, it will not work. Foreign countries must do physical, technical and engineering help as well as monetary help. No other way.

Melamchi, what a tragedy. This Royals have the hands to mess it up.

Another thing, someone suggested maybe a Kulekhani water project, I am sure there would be trouble there as well. Then some other Shree 6 with little technical background would say at the time, maybe it will be cheaper to get water to Kathamandu from Gosaikunda or somewhere else..........

The saga would go on and on...

It is not only about having bribery. It is also about Value, Respect, Trust of Nepal and Nepalese in the forum of World.

Nepal is used to known by God Buddha, Mt. Everest, Yeti, Gurkha and Sherpa. All positive reputation of Nepal.

But these reputation and images has been decreasing rapidly so fast in eyes, hearts, minds and souls of other countries.

So India is taking all advantages of our weakness.

Nice to read all technical as well as political aricles on Melamchi. I am one of the engineers who worked for Melamchi Project in 1991-2001. At that time the project wa laaging behind just few months than the scheduled. After Royal bhatatattata and Gyaane's Panchayat, everything has beeen ruined. Please study all the documents regarding the options rather than Melamchi and think as an original Kathmandu dweller,you will realize that how importatnt Melamchi is for us. I am not talking only about Melamchi, if there is any alternative that can have sufficient discharge ( at least 170 MLD) I will be first person to welcome. Forget about lifting water from Trishuli or other rivers, we can not afford the cost of electricity and more importantly, there have been never sufficient power with us.

I do not agree with you that all the government servant are not working for the country. Only few thalus and kaam chor are damaging the image of civil servants. You have to accept that they are the creamest among qualifieds. We all are responsible for malfunctioning of government bodies, you nad me too.

Do you know Sher bahadur Dueba party is "Democratic" but the most corrupt and criminals are there.
