Science can be misused as a religion......I should add that there were days in Quantum Theory that I was beginning to suspect that QED -is- a religion; it seems to work as much by faith as mathematics. :-S

I believe i can flyyyyy........i believe i can touch the skyyyyyyy

I read a book "long pilgrimage" by John Bennett many years ago. This book is about Shivapuri baba. (More on Shivapuri baba on - http://literature.wnso.org/2005/life_of_the_Shivapuri_baba_Mohan.htm). There was a interesting discussion with Albert Einstein and Shivapuri baba about religion and science. Yes it is the same famous Albert Einstein. I do not remember the details of the discussion, it has been a while but Baba talked why science is based on faith and Einstein agrees. If you can find the book it is worth the read.

Science does not believe in religion
----
Is true. Religion is bounded by the belief that there exists a supernatural power in the name of GOD or whatever. Science does not believe in supernatural stuffs. If it has to believe in anything of that sort, then it should be justified by a logic and when it is done, the supernatural stuffs become quite commonplace. That's the beauty of science.

Religion is unproven faith, science is logical findings.

Okay, my turn to make conciliatory gestures and noises...I think that science is like magic for everyday people. You put a bowl of soup into a microwave and zap it gets hot. Or you turn the key to your car and vroom it gets you to where you're going. Now a scientific mind may have a grasp of some of the consequences of things and construct instruments accordingly but I have never seen any evidence as to WHY these phenomena occur.

Religion is all about why? What is the underlying purpose behind things? Thus they lie in two mutually distinct fields, one seeks to extend the functionality of tools and techniques the other seeks to deal with the nature of existence for human beings. One has too much perspective the other is immersed in daily living and is not open to objective reasoning. And just like magic scientists can be black or white, obsessing with power, smugness and superiority or seeking to facilitate daily living. Thus both science and spirituality are dangerous because of pride. But both are necessary. Let's face it its unrealistic not to believe in God and its an affront to human curiousity not to pursue science.......

Hunk_in_Grave,

I have met with many scientists in my life and they are all religious and have met many religious people who admire science. There is no conflict in their lives.

Bottom line is you can trash relegion/faith as "unrealistic" and or try to understand the science in faith.

I beg to differ with you lady. While both religion and science tend to answer "WHY" in their own ways, religion interprets things defensively. When you are sort of logics, you tend to be defensive and let things dictate on you, that is what religion is about. Science on the other hand has the luxury to be offensive coz it is open in the sense that things under it are proven.
Believing science or religion hence signifies the nature of a human being. If you believe in religion---you are defensive whereas if you believe in science, you are the MAN. Needless to say, science is not complete, it won't be coz the intricacies of nature have left too many things yet to be explained.

being simple is easy...it's just that people doesn't really know what is simple so they make it difficult.

"Science does not believe in religion"

Religion is the opium of masses- correctly said. Religion is what we created, what we wanted to believe. Man will not surrender to things- it didnt surrender to nature. So it has to be someone, not something. Someone much powerful, much strong. A concept called God. We created that concept. But much before that, the Mesopotamians worshipped everything from sun to trees- surrender to nature. Thats how religion started.

Science is also belief, but a lot of times we don't perceive it as illusion- because we try to prove it with facts (closest we can get to reality). But what we do miss is, Reality what we call it, is also a concept, only a concept.

We tend to think what we see is real. We haven't seen anything like god, so for believers of science, god is not real. There could be life in another planet- among the billions that are in space. But unless we see it, science won't believe it. I personally like to believe reality is already there- its another dimension. Just because we can't perceive it, its not real? Science is only discovery of what is already there. In a way, its a belief, its a religion, its what we created and what we want to believe is reality. Okay where am I!!

Define simplicity, Cerine.:) What do you say simple or difficult, or rather how simple is simple and how difficult is difficult?

Let me quote this "Question everything I say. Do not believe just because I said it. The more you question you will be more closer to truth" - Gautam Buddha

Your statement shows lack of understanding on the subject. Relegion is not belie- on-what-I- say, rather question everything and understand.
