Sept. 28: A Delhi radio jockey’s alleged taunts at Indian Idol 3 winner
Prashant Tamang became the trigger for street riots in an ethnically
divided Siliguri today, prompting police firing, army intervention and
an indefinite curfew.
A local mob’s attacks on the mainly Nepalese supporters of Tamang and
then the police left at least 50 people injured, including two men hit
by police bullets. The army and the BSF were patrolling the town
tonight.
Some 5,000 people, including 800 schoolchildren, were marching against RJ
Nitin’s alleged derogatory remarks about Tamang’s Nepalese origins when
they were stoned, chased and besieged around 11.35am after rumours
accused them of hooliganism near a hospital. (See chart)

About 800 of the protesters who ran into the compounds of a court and the
district telecom office were trapped inside for eight hours before the
army rescued them at 7.45pm.

“There were more than 50 schoolchildren with us. They had nothing to eat through the day,” said marcher Avinash Tamang.
Outside, the mob stood guard, braving repeated baton-charges and tear-gassing by

police and ignoring back-to-back proclamations of Section 144 by the
district and subdivision administrations.

The rumours spread across the town prompting crowds elsewhere to torch a
Tata Sumo with a Sikkim number plate at Collegepara and a police
vehicle at Hospital More in the afternoon. Outside the court, the first
mob burnt a motorbike.

The police, who had driven four buses and three vans inside the court compound abandoned plans to rescue the rallyists and called for BSF and army help.
The BSF could do little till the army arrived from Sukna at 7pm. Forty-five minutes later, the first batch of besieged rallyists was taken out in three police buses, three army trucks and two police vans, escorted by troops. The second batch came out at 8.30pm in five vans.
Idol, a TV music talent hunt decided by voting via text messaging and phone calls, had stoked regional sentiments but failed to divide Siliguri. Both Nepalese and non-Nepalese had voted for Tamang, 24.
The marchers had set out from Darjeeling More towards the subdivisional office 2km away to hand over a written demand for an apology from the FM channel.
“I urge you all to maintain calm, otherwise I may not be able to concentrate in my career,” Tamang said in a TV appeal in Bengali and Nepali. The rumours that sparked the rioting could not be verified but it’s possible that a minor quarrel had taken place between some of the marchers and a patient’s relatives. In the first few minutes of the clashes, the rallyists, too, had vandalised about 50 makeshift stalls outside the courthouse.
The police fired “seven rounds” around 4.30pm. One bullet struck Biswajit Das, a shopper from Jalpaiguri district, in the back while a second lodged in trader Acchalal Prasad’s right thigh.

असोजको पहिलो साता नेपाली सञ्चारमाध्यममा तीनवटा विषय निकै चर्चामा रहे । पहिलो 'इन्डियन आइडल' बनेका प्रशान्त, दोस्रो योगगुरु स्वामी रामदेव र तेस्रो कपिलवस्तु नरसंहार । कपिलवस्तु नरसंहारको स्थलगत रपिोर्टिङ्का लागि हामी बुटवल पुग्दा प्रशान्तलाई इन्डियन आइडल बनाउन प्रचारप्रसार र पैसा उठाउने काम भइरहेको थियो । तर, नजिकै कपिलवस्तुमा पीडित एवम् विस्थापितहरू भोकमा तड्पिरहेका थिए । जलेका घर, नरकङ्काल, विस्थापितका शोक अनि पति मारेर बलात्कार गरएिका महिला देखेर विक्षिप्त हँुदै भोलिपल्ट साँझ हामी बुटवल पुग्दा प्रशान्त इन्डियन आइडल बनेको खुसीयालीमा उत्सव मनाइँदै थियो ।

नेपाली मूलका प्रशान्त इन्डियन आइडल बनेको खुसीसँगै आएको दुःख हामी किन अनुभव गर्न सक्दैनौँ ? दिल्लीमा प्रशान्त इन्डियन आइडल बन्दा काठमाडौँ हाँस्छ भने कपिलवस्तुमा नरसंहार हुँदा किन दुख्दैन ? भारतमा जन्मेका, भारतमै हुर्केका अनि भारतीय प्रहरीमा कार्यरत प्रशान्त नेपाली मूलका हुनेबित्तिकै हाम्रा काँधमा सजाउन योग्य भए तर नेपालको तराईमा जन्मेर पुस्ताँैदेखि त्यहीँ बस्दै आएका मधेसी किन हाम्रा लागि नेपाली हुन सकेनन् ?

गत वर्ष माघमा तराई आन्दोलन भयो । त्यसले वर्षौंदेखि कुन्ठित मधेसी समुदायको भावनालाई मूलधारमा उजागर गर्‍यो । तर, त्यसपछि पनि तराईमा सामाजिक एवम् धार्मिक सद्भाव भड्काउन संविधानसभाविरोधी तत्त्वहरू लागिपरेका छन् । परण्िाामस्वरूप उनीहरू कहिले नेपालगन्ज कान्ड मच्चाउँछन् त कहिले लहान अनि कहिले गौर त, कहिले कपिलवस्तु । उनीहरू काठमाडौँमा बम पड्काउँछन् भने दाङमा बितन्डा मच्चाउँछन् । यस्तोबेला राजनीतिक दलहरूले पटकपटक दोहोरनिे यस्ता घटनाबाट पाठ सिकेको देखिँदैन । अझै पनि सरकार संवेदनशील नहुने हो भने यस्ता घट्ना बढ्दै जानेछन् । जनआन्दोलनको 'म्यान्डेट' सहित सत्तामा पुगेका दलहरूले समयमै संविधानसभा निर्वाचन नगरेर सङ्क्रमणकाल लम्ब्याउँदै लाने हो भने यीभन्दा ठूल्ठूला दुर्घटना हुन सक्छन् ।

कपिलवस्तुले हिंसा र मृत्यु बेहोररिहँदा काठमाडौँ जीवनलाई निरोगी बनाउन र मानसिक स्वास्थ्यका लागि स्वामी रामदेवको शिविरमा रमाइरहेको थियो । योग जीवनका लागि अति उपयोगी साधना हो । तर, स्वामी रामदेवको शिविर धाउने धेरै जनाले कपिलवस्तुले जीवन गुमाइरहेको अनुभव गर्न सकेनन् । के गौतम बुद्धको जन्मथलो कपिलवस्तुमा हिंसा मच्चिरहँदा काठमाडौँ शान्तिको सन्देश लिएर कपिलवस्तु जान सक्दैन ?

असुरक्षाको कारण देखाउँदै पहिलो दिन रोकिएको स्वामी रामदेवको शिविर सफल पार्न तत्काल सम्पूर्ण सत्तारुढ दल, सुरक्षा निकाय एवम् वरष्िठ मन्त्रीहरू शिविरस्थलमै खटिए । कतिसम्म भने सरकारबाट बाहिरइिसकेको माओवादी नेताहरूसमेत त्यहाँ पुगे । तर, कपिलवस्तुलाई सुरक्षा दिन कोही खटिएनन् । गृहमन्त्रीसहितको टोली घटनाको छैटाँै दिन मात्र कपिलवस्तु पुग्यो । जलिरहेको चन्द्रौटा बजारसँगै जोडिएको सशस्त्र प्रहरीको बेसक्याम्पबाट सुरक्षाकर्मी परचिालन नभएको आक्रोश अहिले पनि स्थानीय बासिन्दामा छ । चन्द्रौटा चौकीका जनपद प्रहरीले कुटाइ खाँदा र चौकी तोडफोड हँुदासमेत प्रशासन बेलैमा सचेत हुनसकेन ।

भदौ ३० गते कपिलवस्तु जलिरहँदा काठमाडौँमा माओवादी सरकारबाट बाहिरनिे उद्घोष गररिहेको थियो भने अन्य दलहरू उसलाई सत्ताबाट बाहिरनि नदिन फकाइरहेका थिए । सत्ताको खिचातानीमा लागेका सात दललाई कपिलवस्तु नरसंहारले समयमै पटक्कै छोएन । यसको ज्वलन्त उदाहरण हो, कपिलवस्तु घटनाको चार दिनपछि मात्र मन्त्रिपरष्िाद्को 'आकस्मिक' बैठक बस्नु । के त्यसै दिन सरकारबाट बाहिरनिे र भित्रिने विवाद छाडेर सबै दल घटनाको यथार्थ पत्ता लगाउन, जनतालाई सुरक्षा दिन र उद्धार गर्न खटिनुपर्ने होइन ? काठमाडौँको यस्तै संवेदनाहीन व्यवहारको फाइदा प्रतिगामी अनि धार्मिक एवम् जातीय सद्भाव भड्काउन खोज्ने आपराधिक तत्त्वहरूले लिने गरेका छन् ।

If still lazy to do it (though you did ask me my sources when in fact you could've spent the same amount of time and found it on your own on google...Now, thats friggin amazing!!), then ask your friends who hail from Darj and if you ain't got none, then I'll send you over a few phone #s where you could call them and ask them personally!! BTW, I'd have done all the work and cited the websites here, but hell, similarly I'm too lazy to post it here.
