Guys,

Wanted to go down memory lane. The older guys on sajha must have good memories of when Nepal Television first came to Nepal. I remember that only one of my relatives had a TV at first. And it was such a big deal. At first there was only news and a few hours of television programming.

I was wondering what are the shows you remember?

My memories are of Rama Singh and Durgha nath Sharma telling the news. I still remember the tune when the news started.

The cartoon Barba-papa - this chewing gum looking character with his family...Barba-mama, barba-joe, barba-this and barba-that. Whole family could change shape on command. I think this was one of the first cartoons on NTV. Us kids were highly entertained. Clickety-click Barba click!

On Saturday afternoons, my friends and I would sit down to watch the afternoon show.

Remember Variety Variety -- it was like 'America's got talent.' It was like a circus with people with all kinds of talents.

And I remember foreign shows like--The Professionals (that was my favorite. My cousin and I used to run around with fake guns and pretend that we were the professionals.) Dempsey and Makepiece. The A team. Faulty towers.
Knight Rider...and that show with the super-motorcycle. I forget that name.

And then there were Nepali shows like...damn I don't remember but I remember the character played by Ramesh Budhathoki -- Deepak Thapa. In that character Ramesh Budhathoki used to do this thing with his forefinger that he would rub it under his nose. Wow, that really caught on in Kathmandu during that time. All the kids were doing that. The funny thing was that apparantly whenever any kid saw Budhathoki, they would do that to him and after a while it started to get annoying to him. LOL.

And I remember all the advertisements that used to be made in India. You could tell because they were Indian actors in the commercial but the words would be Nepali. Some of it would sound so odd. Like that Maggi commercial, "Mummy bhok lage chha." (as opposed to 'Mummy, bhok lagyo')

Anyone remember "Kichu Dada"? I forgot the name of the serial. Remember the dialogue "Kichu dada ko kaam kichnu thichnu ra michnu ho"?

Yes "Pratibha ko Dabali" was a very good show. I think some "Khaires" took the concept to the west for the shows like "Idol" and other singing shows. That was the first reality live singing show I ever watched. Sadly mobile was not there at that time otherwise they would have sms voting round as well.

I don't have much memory, but still remember something.
The tele serial "Janaiko Sancho" was very popular
The first Nepali film in NTV was "ParalkoAgo".
We used to watch TV in outdoor with more then 100 people.

My fav one was the cartoon before that bal karyakram !!! It was first real nepali cartoon....  we used to associate us to those character..... i was the second last one in that line... the jump walking one !!

Automan and The Flash were other two favourites. All of my frens used to try walking like the flash !!!

Ujeli deserved to be in Oscar... Absolutely gr8. No other Nepali serial are up to that standard till date. Mukti by Tulsi Ghimire and that one which lunched Dipa Shree as an actress came close in my view.

Friday night with Santosh Pant was a great family time.

My mum was very fond of dohori geet on thursday 7:00 pm. I liked that too.

There was another program.... i think the name was Aayam.... hosted by Smita Rana about science and tech... that was good too....

Rocky
Funny I remember both the jokes u mentioned. And yes, Yo Jadu haina...wow I had totally forgotten about it. I always used to say, "Kalle jadu bhanay chha ta."

How about those pakistani serials with suspense ending in every series, Urusa...I forgot the rest, there was one with cop-theif story etc etc.

Darjdai, kuires didn't take pratibha ko dabli and made idol out of it. (more than idol the format matched America's got talent).
They had other shows like Oppertunity Knocks (BBC), and superstar or something like that (hosted by Ed McMohan) in US. The difference was the involvement by judges and that's what's set the recent shows apart.

Oh ya!!! Does any one remembers about the British Language Program called Follow Me. It was kind of fun to watch. And the cartoon Mazzi in the Ganduland that used to come in the same program(I think...). And I remembered the Wildlife Documentaries by National Geographic. It really captured my childhood imagination.

And Poon-Hill!! was that Do,Dell,Dick cartoon a kind of stop animation? I remember somewhat i think. The character were blue, yellow and red(i think). They used to live on the tree. One on the top another in the middle and one had a nice room at the bottom of the tree.

And does any one remember there used to be a show called Club NTV or something like that. Every week different artists used to sing a song and the crowd used to dance wildly. It was kind of funny.

@Bluemoon you really refreshed my memory. I remember watching that Paral ko Aago with my mom. First I didnt wanted to watch that movie since it was black and white but later I end up watching it.
@Gairamailo thanks for reminding Oshin. It used to be a topic to talk about in class.

Yes "Silk Road" was very nice documentary. It is still on my "All time fav" list. But can't find dvd anywhere.

I found "Honey hunters of Nepal" dvd on my recent visit to KTM. That was also a great documentary but it did not make my heart beat faster when I watched it recently on dvd. Teti bela ta ambo kasto dhuk dhuk hune tyo jhundera maha nikaleko dekhda.

The talk show of Bijay Kumar Pandey was quite popular. Again I don't recall the name of the show. His interview questions used to put many interviewees in very difficult positions sometimes with very straight and hard questions. The show was like today's "Hard Talk" of BBC. Most times he used to start with "Laaa........mo samay dekhi" with his nasal voice. Nice program, never wanted to miss.

This thread brought back some memories.  I remember watching NTV first during the 3rd SAARC summit that happned at Kathmandu, I think it was around 1987.  Like many on this thread, I too remember watching those rainbow scree and waiting for NTV to start.  Chakravyuh is my all time favorite NTV drama show, remember "kicchu Dada", "Deepak Thapa" and "Sunny KC'.  My another favorite was serial name "Raap" by Rames Budathoki.

Also the Pakistani serials were really good.  Anybody remember "Tanhaiyaa", a Pakistani serial about two sisters?  I still remember "Haku baba" from that.   There were so many good English shows like The Professional, Dempsey and Makepeace, Bonanza, Street Hawak, Knight Rider, The A team and Miami Vice.

WE were fighting to switch the channel.  Me and my brother were much more into Pakistani serial shown by NTV. We always rushed to switch to NTV but we have other crowed who never let us switch until the letter " Kramsa , The End" pops up in the screen (Ramayan and Mahabharat  serials )
