Id say sony!! its relatively more expensive ( and reasonably so) than canon and panasonic but as they say, good things in life don’t come cheap. DO look into DCR-HC36. Great for amateurs.

I have used both Sony and Panasonic cameras. Sony sure beats Panasonic but I am not sure how it compares to Canon though.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV260 Digital8 camcorder, takes a great picture but when I burn on CD picture quality goes down.I tried several different softwares for burning ,still picture qulity remains the same(I mean worse). So,there might be two things for this:either something is going wrong im my cam or this is what it is.

superexchange, you can`t have best of two world. You either have a dedicated video cmaera or photo taking camera. I f a video cmaera comes with photo taking capability then the photo that it takes will surely not be as good as the taken by a photo taking camera.

superexchange, I think the quality of your video depends on the capture cards and also the output settings.

Fccuk ! Sony. I bought one 2 yrs ago. I lost lens two times. Later it was again giving problem, itself changes the mode while taking vedio. I hardly used it more than 20 times. I know, I am always taking intensive care of my things. I dont recommend Sony any more.

Just make sure you dont buy DCRDVD602E. I bought it n dont't feel that it's too good a buy. What with no USB interface and no remote control, and the viewfinder's LCD being black and white, I don't like my camera at all. And the price of the camcorder makes things even more complex, 49000 ns for not-so-sun-to-use camera.

Recently, I bought a canon camcorder eventhough many people suggested me to buy Sony. I would suggest you not to go by brand name. Every brand has a low and high quality. Just go to www.cnet.com. You'll see there many users reviews and ratings.....then it will help you to decide a better camcorder for you.
