I will be going to Melbourne and my wife will be going to Sydney. Since this is first time we are going to Australia, we are bit worried to stay apart. How easy is the transportation between Sydney and Melbourne and how is cost?

Looking for feedback from people in Australia.

Plane about $220 including return.. about an hour or so..

bus about $135 takes 12 hrs.

Train a bit expensive but takes the same time..

Its better to catch train to see all the beauty of Australia.

Airfare is about 200 two-way.

No consession for students unless you have city rail consession Card.They have not issued them since 96.

- There is no student discount, unless you can get one from 'student travel agency (STA). But still this card doesn't work most of time. You need to be resident-student to get real student discount, otherwise you gotaa pay the full price. And dont worry, they are not that expensive. You can afford it easily.

- Go by plane if you want a real shortcut, if you can't wait to see your wife.(How come you two a're going to two different cities?). Anyways, it takes an hour and half, costs around 200bucks.

- Go by train if you are tired and sleepy coz there is nothing to see except wide countryside. It takes about 8 hours, costs around 150bucks.

- Go by bus, catch the ocean route if you want to see the real beauty of Australia, it's amazing. It takes about 10 hours, costs around 120bucks.

- If you planning on frequently visiting your wife then apply for a 'frequent flyer' card from any airlines. The more you buy, the more you fly.

- If you know how to drive (if you are new in Melbourne, you can use your Nepalese license for six months). Costs $30 a day to rent a car and around $70 for petrol. Its wise idea to go for a drive if you are travelling together. Driving from Melbourne to Sydney via Lakes Entrance is awesome drive. All the roads are safe and all the views are fantastic....It's 963kms and it takes 9 hours by car.

If you do travel by car, make sure that your gas tank is at least half full all the time. There are not as many gas stations as in the US.

Couple of years ago, we drove from Sydney to Melbourne. We took the inland route rather than the coastal because it was shorter and we wanted to stop by Canberra, Australia's capitol. When we headed out of Canberra, our car's gas gauge showed little less than quarter full. Good thing we filled up the tank immediately because after that gas station there was not another one for almost 200 kilometers.

Though the highway is between Australia's two largest cities, it can be quite deserted at times. We were thinking it would suck if the car broke down because the settlements were few and far between.

As everybody has already mentioned, Melbourne and Sydney not too far. However, I don't like the idea that your wife will be living in Sydney and you in Melbourne. . . unless u have a really good reason. Its not too practical to travel 1000 KM to meet your wife (to meet your GF . . . well it would sound more reasonable. hehehehe jus kidding). Driving 9 - 10 hours . . . hare Shiva!!! Licence, no problem. As an international student,you can use Nepal's license. Just make sure that its got everything in english (including the dates) otherwise you'll need to get it translated and will need to possess the translation whenever you drive. and license from Nepal as old as 5 years are better if you plan to get one in Australia. (You won't have to live with "P" license).
