The Week We Realized We Aren't Coming Back (Unless there's a Bartabanda)
Move over, Washington D.C.; Dallas is officially the new capital of the Nepali-American empire. The Consulate General of Nepal in Dallas has raked in over $500,000 in revenue in just seven months.
Apparently, the DFW diaspora was so tired of driving to D.C. for a passport that they’ve flooded the Dallas office with over 3,000 applications. At this rate, the revenue from passport renewals alone might soon surpass the GDP of some small nations.
It turns out that when you stop making people fly halfway across a continent for a stamp, they actually pay their fees! Deputy Consul General Dhana Joshi and NST President Bijay Bhusal are likely the busiest people in Texas right now.
The West Coast Kickoff: San Francisco’s "Mini Nepal"
Before we even look at the East Coast, California already set the bar high. The Nepal Festival and Parade in San Francisco just wrapped up (held around May 10–12). Organized by NRNA California, they actually shut down Market Street for a 1.6-mile march from City Hall to Embarcadero Plaza. It was a full takeover featuring Lakhe dances and Panche Baaja that likely confused the local tech bros but gave the Bay Area a much-needed dose of culture.
The Main Event: Manhattan’s 10th Anniversary
While San Francisco is recovering from its hangover, New York is gearing up for the heavy lifting. This Sunday, May 17, 2026, marks the 10th Anniversary of the Nepal Day Parade in Manhattan.
The Route: Starting at 38th Street and Madison Avenue at 1:00 PM.
The Vibe: Organized by NRNA NYC and FIPNA, the organizers are calling it a "Unified Front". They claim all the different diaspora groups have "mended hearts" to march together. We’ll see if that unity lasts past the first plate of sel-roti at the after-party!
The "Hope" Trap: NRNA Australia & The New Budget
Down under, NRNA Australia is officially "energized" and "optimistic" about the Nepal Government’s proposed policies for 2026/27. They’ve welcomed the "Diaspora Expert Network" and "Knowledge Bank" with open arms.
The satire writes itself here: the government has promised to make repatriating profits "reliable" and investment "transparent". While NRNA Australia says this sends a "positive message," the cynical among us are still waiting to see if "Knowledge Bank" is just a fancy term for a Google Form that gets checked once every three years.
The Sizzling Reality: Salmonella & Fines
It wasn't all parades and policy wins. A Nepali restaurant in Sydney was recently slapped with a $37,500 fine following a Salmonella outbreak. It’s a harsh reminder that while our "Gorkhali" spirit is strong, our food safety protocols occasionally need a 2.0 relaunch. Let this be a lesson to the diaspora: we want your revolutionary ideas and your remittances, but we’d prefer to keep our gut health intact.
The Gorkhali Verdict
We are sending billions home, renewing passports by the thousands, and marching through both Market Street and Madison Avenue. Yet, we are still chasing that elusive "paper." Whether you’re in Dallas, Sydney, or Manhattan, the message is clear: the diaspora is the powerhouse, but we’re still waiting for a reason to pack our bags for good—besides the occasional wedding vacation.
