Communal Clashes!

According to media reports, the Sunsari incident is being painted as a Hindu-Muslim clash, and some of our right-wing extremists find this a good opportunity to act like eggheads and want to capitalize on this and create more division in our society.

In the past decade, we have seen a slight tilt toward right-wing Hinduvta, as in India. I think we are still a tolerant society, and we are in some ways lucky that we have not witnessed extreme violence against another community like in India. Still, if we don't act now, we will see bigger clashes in the future.

It's time we had strong laws to protect us from such communal conflicts. We can look at Singapore and study how their laws protect minorities and prevent communal conflicts, and the harsh punishments enforced against such folks involved in such incidents.

Singapore had its share of racial conflicts in the 60s. It was Chinese vs Malaya and sometimes involved its citizens of Indian origin. But they decided to make it a crime to attack each other and create disturbances between each other.

I think some of our folks seem to be inspired by the BJP nataks across India. I don't know why some of our folks would want to walk around a Muslim neighborhood at night and blare loud music to celebrate their own religious thing. I have no problem with people being religious, but trying to pick up a fight with someone who practices another faith for no good reason is just stupid and against any religion.

This is not the first time such clashes have occurred in this country. We have witnessed similar incidents, mostly in the Terai region. Well, we need strong laws to punish anyone who wants to create a communal conflict. We need to make sure that any religious programs or events must have permission from the local administration, and please no disturbances at night.

We also need to make sure that our security personnel are not allowed to use any lethal means to control any crowd as well. Time to ban the use of live ammunition to control any crowd in this country.

Let's hope things will calm down in Sunsari. Holding an all-party meeting is not going to resolve any issues. We need to sit down with these two communities in Sunsari and work towards creating harmony and brotherhood instead of fighting over loud music or trying to diss each other's religion.

And for our right-wing extremists who think they are all high and mighty, please shove your intolerant, wicked views up your own arse. Yes, most of us are Hindus in this land, but most of us do respect each other regardless of our religion, caste, and gender.

If one wants to be a true Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, or a Christian or anything else, then please read your religious books first and be a good person who respects others and loves all. We cannot import the right-wing brand from across the border just like we import vegetables and many new religious and cultural habits. It's time to be a Nepali, a better one, and help each other and be good neighbors!
