The Martyr Nation
It seems that you can become a martyr even if you die in a scuffle in a neighborhood war in this country. The government has declared the folks who lost their lives during violent clashes in Sunsari and Siraha as martyrs and, of course, provided financial compensation to their families as well.
Yes, we do feel the pain of those families, but if every scuffle is looked at as some political movement or even a fight for freedom to blare loud music and then pelt stones at the loud ones, then God help us all! I thought Martyrs were our freedom fighters, not street fighters. It's time we either scrap this 'martyr' tag in this day of the Republic or just declare everyone a martyr when their time is up!
Everybody looked at the protests across the border some time ago. The students were beaten and even shot at, but with pellets instead of real bullets. We saw the police brutality there as well. But when it comes to our land, our trigger-happy cops have shot and killed hundreds in the past two decades of mili-juli sarkars.
The Congress, UML and Maoist (CUM) chors all fought against the previous system and their cadres faced police brutality to the extreme. But it never opened their eyes, and when they were in power, they used the same police force to kill innocent protestors.
I think it's time we just have a law that clearly states that you cannot shoot at protestors with live or rubber or anything. If our police cannot handle the heat, then the best option is to leave the hot spot, go home, eat some curry, quit the force, and go overseas like most of us!
If our security personnel fire at an unarmed citizen, then those people should be held accountable, punished, and fired from the job. But this doesn't happen in Nepal. Those involved in shooting at our young students during the Gen Z protests are still serving in the police force and will never face the music.
We cannot continue to declare everyone a martyr and disrespect the brave souls who fought against the autocratic Rane regime or the oppressive Panchayati era. Even on this day of the Republic, those who lost their lives fighting for our fundamental rights deserve eternal respect as well.
But if we keep on handing out martyrdom status for every communal clash, local street fights, and sometimes even accidental police crossfires, then we are insulting the memory of those who actually fought for our freedom!
It's time we stopped using this 'martyr' tag as a band-aid for our systemic failure. Every life matters, and no more killing anyone by our security personnel, especially unarmed citizens. If you are armed and you are attacking police personnel, then I see no reason for the men in blue not to fire back, but that's a different story.
It's time to hold everyone accountable, be it our netas, our hakims, and our security personnel as well. Dear Police, stop killing innocent folks. Dear Government, either punish these killers or be like the same government as before, quiet and a willing participant in the killings of innocent folks in this country!
