I think you are good enough , you just go online tutorial for core java programing and meantime you can start Bigdata training too.

As gone12 says, it is important to have knowledge of OO programming (mostly Java) and Linux. I would recommend to download a Cloudera or hortonworks in a virtual machine or vmware and use the example below to get little insight into big data world:

Cloudera: http://www.cloudera.com/content/cloudera/en/downloads.html
Hortonworks: http://hortonworks.com/products/hortonworks-sandbox/#install
Example: http://www.ikzen.com/downloads/ikzen-1.12.14.zip

biology, I am relatively new to big data but I started learning about basic hadoop eco-system and mapreduce last year only. If you are really interested to understand big data than python is good to start with. Here is a link to lectures from Cloudera with python.

In same boat like bhunteykaji, how tough is getting placement in big data? Have done some online training and self study. It's hard to find any use cases. Anybody working in hadoop development/admin?

I am also learning BigData by myself. I am currently working in datawarehousing/SQL/ETL stuffs and trying to jump into this bigdata. It's very hard to find nepalese working in BigData. I am also taking some paid training too. Please keep this thread live so that we can share our experience. Why don't we create a a separate google group for this nepalese big data conversation?
Your thoughts?

I got an opportunity to play around with BIG data for POC.
I did use hortonworks.
I am up for learning more on big data although I am not a database guy.

I've also started reading this book http://www.amazon.com/Hadoop-Definitive-Guide-Tom-White-ebook/dp/B0082FE448/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1424821748&sr=1-2&keywords=Hadoop. It has some detail information regarding MapReduce

I created a google group "Big_Data_Learners" for sharing experiences, and knowledge on Hadoop. If any working on it actually, few knowledge sharing would help others too. Send email to xpox9000@gmail.com to get added to this group
