I am seeking a help from you fellow student and friends of sajha. I am planning to come to US(if I get the visa) for undergrad studies.I visited several consultancies here in KTM and they all were ready to get me I-20 frm several different Universities in different parts of Amrika for Rs 20000-30000.  The University in Kansas City or Oklahama or Minnesota all sounds same to me because all I know is those Places are in USA. My main concern is I should be able to support myself and pay my tution fees  from 2nd. semester onwards. (My father is willing to sell all his land in village but I don't think it will be enough to pay 1 semester's fees.). So,You caring people in Sajha, can you enlighten me which place to choose to go to University  where I could find the job on the side easily. I have heard that some of those University are in such a place where you wouldn't find anything else for 100 Miles around. Which are the popular University where most of the Nepalese comes? I checked some of the university's website...and Meri Bassaii!!!! Mero bau ko matra haina..kaka ko thulo bau ko sabaiko sampati bechera pani 1 semester ko fees tirna pugdaina vanya. I wonder how so many Nepalese could afford to attend School in U.S. Jasko ghar bata pani 1-2 jana ta US ma chhan chhan. Lau na sathi ho..mero pani valo garidinu paryo. Yeso kun kun University sasto chha, scholarship paune chance kati chha, Kam ko k halat chha vanera. Thanks in advance to you all.

minnesota state university system offers instate tuition fee for international students as  well.  so, your best bet would be one of the state universities in minnesota.  there are few other schools as well which offers instate tuition for international students.  i do nt recall now, but at least on in arkansas. you should try to find those school first. it is very risky to work off campus in oklahoma, so i would nt suggest you to come in oklahoma.  kansas city is alright too.  why do you have to consultancies to get I 20?  can not you go to USEF and do the process in your own.  it is good idea to do well in toefl, sat and apply early as possible to get into good school with scholorship.  thats how you should start.

Chichi is right...grad studies better than undegrad...try to complete STEM (Science, technology, Mathmatics) BS (4yrs) degree  or BS (3 yrs) plus MS and then apply for graduate school.

Son, if you want my very honest advise, do 4 year bachelor in nepal. And then apply for the masters. In that case, not only you will save your father's land, if you get admission, you will probably get significant graduate assitantship. Then, for your study, you would not have to work your ass off and just to remain in status need to go to community college.

Also you will not have to show hell lot of financial docs for visa for master's, coz it is just max two years ( NOT FOURRRRRRRYEARS). That means, there is high probablity in getting visa for masters. One more thing, VERY IMP, even you come here for undergrad, and if you manage to get job, you will have to run through H1-b( working visa) lottery. if you are not selected, you are gone! And if you have US master degree, they have 20,000 quota for US Masters, so there lot more probablity in getting H1-b through master quota than regular undergrad degree. THIS IS VERY IMP, COZ YOU WOULD DREAM OF MAKING MONEY ONCE YOU GET JOB, BUT THIS MIGHT NOT GO IN YOUR WAY.

I would suggest go to KU or Engg College-or Medicine, whichever is your choice. If you do that, life would be less painful. Do not waste your time and energy just to earn tuition fee for some cheap colleges.

Kiddo..you deserve better life!

If you do not do that, you will remember me once you land here. Then do not forget to email me.

Again feel free to email me. Will be happy to save one more nepali life!

My suggestion is, find a University where few Nepalses are there. bring money for at least 2 semester, in I -20 living expenses are too high, you wouldn't be paying that much to live. Anyway,  study 1 semester there, mean while apply  for  a job on campus, which is just 20 hours, work whatever they offer, do't be picky. once u get a job,  they gonna apply Social security for you, once you get that, look for different cheaper universties. within 1 semester (3-4) you will be able to find your way. good luck.

Refrail,Undergrad program and doing it here not as painful as Eagle5 has suggested. There are some studentswho have had a hard time and majority of them because of their own actions: too much fun or low GPAs. Some of them, despite being geniune and honest towards their work have also happened to havea difficult time mainly because of H1B lottery system introduced last year. BUT, this in no way means that all Nepalese or foreign Undergrad students suffer here. If you choose your majorlooking at what is in demand in the US, getting a job after graduation (even Undergrad) should not behard. As you can guess, the Health Care/Medical field has the mostd emand in the US and this is expected to be the case for decades. So, if you choose any Health Care/Medical Major likeBachelors of Science (BS) in Nursing, BS in Medical Technology, BS in Radiology, BS in RespiratoryTherapy, BS in Physical Therapy, you will get a job after graduation and the biggest catchhere is health care people work in hospitals or clinics, most of which are non-profit, thatmeans they don't have to follow the lottery H1B system. Non-profit emplpoyers (no matter whothey may be or no matter what they do-eg hospitals, organizations, associations, educational systems, churches, research centers etc) can file you H1B (a working visa that allows you to legally workin the US) any time of the year unlike profit-based employers who have to follow the H1B lotterysystems. Having said that, you can apply initial at a university in Oklahoma that are among the least expensive universities in the country. After spending a semester there, you can transferto a community college in nearby Dallas, TX, where the tuiton fees and living expense isvery low and the job availability is high. When and IF you maintain good GPA (study hard and dogood in your courses) and complete some of your course, you will easily get a scholarhsipto transfer to a university from where you will eventually graduate. If you have a 3.5 GPA from a community college in Dallas, which is not very hard to obtain at community college, you will get two scholarships for University of TX at Arlington and willhave to pay no more than $2000 max per semester. By then you will have made and saved enoughmoney for yourself. So, no worries..... however, like people have suggested, Masters would be the best bet.But if you have made up your mind, Bachelors is also not a bad option. Good Luck to you.

Your father should not sell his land.  The Maoists will distribute it for him so there will be no money to pay for your education .   As to what University you should attend, well, it would be well for you to go to one of the univerities in Nepal which will soon be run by the Maoists.  I hope they can help you correct your spelling of Amrika.  On the other hand, you should probably get out of Nepal as soon as you can before the Maoists close the gates for you people to go to foreign countries.  They will put you to work there planting rice and other crops to sell to other countries so they can stuff their pockets with the profits of you labor.

Aris jee..I am seeking somekind of help here and I don't think I ask for your nonsense opinion. I see you are too much concerned about my spelling error..well I don't think I ask you to proof read it,did I? Brother, seems like you are not happy about Nepal being declared republic but why pour that hatred on my request. I don't think I have asked any political motivated opinion at all. Mind on your own business if you have nothing better to do.

No offence to others! I really appreciate for posting valuable suggestions. Infact your suggestions has made me think twice about my next step. Please keep on posting if you have more to share.

Whatever Eagel said is 100% right. You mentioned that you have friends in US so ask them. I am positive that

they would recommend you to apply for masters rather that undergrad. Dont' rush....everything will be alright.

Hey Refail,

I guess everybody has their own experience and they have their own view from what they have experienced from past. From my experience, I could not be more happier then I am now for my decision to come to US for my undergrad. Rather, I regret the fact I could not make it here for my high school. I did my undergrad from small private university in Minnesota. However at a time when I came we didn't have that much trend of consultancies[third parties with financial interests]. So, I did all my procee myself. I guess my initial homework was fruitful for me to land me in better university with better future prospects. So, my rule of thumb is if you could try to apply to US university and do all the process yourself. It is tough and takes time. I started my process in October, got my I-20 in March next year and VISA in June. Not even a single questions asked during my visa interview.

I have travelled to more than 35 states in US and seen a lot but haven't seen better place then MN for students. Again, offcourse try doing it yourself. If you need help from third party in sorting out where you gonna land up, ur life will be much more dependent once you land here, which I think is a red flag for any immigrant like ourself.

Again, who am I? I am just talking you from my personal experience. Listen to all, do what your guts ask you to do.

GoodLuck with your future endeavor.

Eveyone has their own experience, do not get discouraged by some of the posting. Ofcourse life won't be easy all the time, it has its own highs and lows. I would suggest you to apply yourself instead of paying 20-30000 to cunsultancies. And how about doing some research for somekind of grant and scholarship. Do enough research about school you are applying for.
