Mission Impossible?

Every day, we read about only problems in this land while this government works hard to resolve them, but the system is broken, and it looks like it will take us another decade or two to get it right.

We Nepalis are often impatient, and we tend to assume that new leaders will have all the answers. Everybody is an expert in this land and thinks it is easy to change this country when the hakims, judges, jholeys, police, and shady byaparis have been running this country down the drain for the past three decades.

I think it is difficult when everything is a mess. The water jars are mostly contaminated. Our food products are mostly adulterated, and shady byaparis continue to change the labels and sell us expired stuff. Our private schools keep on fleecing the parents, and the private hospitals do the same for the patients.

And when the government wants to bring in new regulations to make things better, then most of our mafia byaparis are up in arms and want to either do an andolan or stop their businesses and services and want the government to back down.

Maitighar witnesses dozens of protests every week. It's the farmers asking for fair prices. A divorced mother seeking justice. Medical interns fighting for better pay and loan shark victims begging for punishment for the meter byazis. Patriots question the government for not doing enough in Susta. Public school teachers threaten to go on strike again for their own reasons. It seems that everybody wants the government to save them while nobody wants to pay more to save this country from going bankrupt.

When the big earthquake happened in 2015, the government was mostly silent in the first few weeks, and it was us, the people, who banded together to help each other out. Then came the blockade when cooking gas was selling for Rs 10,000 per cylinder and petrol was Rs 500 per liter. We somehow managed with less then, and we are used to paying more for everything as usual.

We expect the government to solve all of our problems as if it has trillions of dollars of uranium or free cash lying around. If we had had the government for the people since the 90s, then 5 million of us wouldn't be overseas to make that extra Dinar, Dollar, Ringgit, and Riyal to take care of our families.

Food prices are up. We hear about shortages of cooking gas again. Fuel prices are up because of the Middle East conflict, and we can't do anything about it. And as usual, most of us are surviving because we have someone abroad sending us the dough to cover our expenses.

It took the Singaporeans almost two decades of hard work and discipline to be a better country and another two decades to be one of the best in the world. We cannot expect this government to come up with some magic formula to suddenly give us jobs, affordable food prices, housing, and more. It will take some time, but are we going to be patient or just continue to shout, whine, bark, and bitch about all the problems and blame the government for everything?

Or are we going to take some responsibility and be a law-abiding citizen, focus on whatever jobs we have, maybe spend less, save a little for rainy days because until the government has the dough to give us free education and healthcare and more, we are on our own and we have been on our own since the days our ancestors went to Muglan to send some dough to their families.

So, let's be patient. Let this government work towards changing the system of loot to a transparent and honest one, and unless the foundation is strong and can stand an 8.0 earthquake, we will continue to have new players leading us to nowhere!
