I have been in United States for more than 4years 10 months, and I got here when I was 19 now I m 24. Now i m ready to apply for Us Citizen, and I got stuck in 1 question that says....." Are you a male who lived in the united states at any time between your 18th and 26th birthdays in any status except as a lawful nonimmigrant?....YES OR NO.. .....If you answerd "YES". but you did not register with the "Selective Service" and are still under 26 years of age, you must register before you apply for naturalization so that you can complete "Date Registered for Selective Service" and ..."Selective Service Number"
One of my friend got here at the same time n same age that i did but he answer No n didn' even register .....
Would you guys plz give me some information about it? ...I m lost here...n don't know what to do

Thank you
Unit

If you are male between 18 and 26 age, you must register for selective service. You can get waived if you entered in USA after 26 years of age. Even in that case, you need to get letter of waiver from selective service. You need to show this letter when you apply for certain benefits such as Federal student loan (FAFSA) etc. Do not become confused and proceed immediately for this. It is very important thing to do.

Unit, the wisest thing to do would be to register for Selective Service System since you are under 25. It is very important if you are applying for US Citizenship and if you are a male between 18 to 25. The best part is that registering for SSS will not cost a penny. You can do it online through https://www4.sss.gov/regver/register1.asp
or send a mail registration form which available at any USPS office.

Does anyone know what is the earliest date to apply for US Citizenship? I heard that you can start the paperwork when you have completed 4 years and 9 months as Permanent Resident. By Nov 2006, it will be my five years of permanent residence in the US.

FYI:
For some reasons, SSS has changed the age range requirement. It used to be 18-26 range where as now it is 18-25.

You can start paperwork after 4 n' half years coz it gonna take 7-8 months to get a American Passport anyway. So, by the time u get ur passport , 5 years will be completed.

if you're married you can apply three months before your 3 years in permanent residece. Given, your spouce has been a us citizen for 3 years, you have married her for 3 years and you're still living with her.
In other case it is 3 months before 5 years in permanent resident. i've heard anything filed before that will be rejected and tey will send you a letter saying too early.

Selective Service - Check Yes. and go to www.sss.gov and register. If you do that you will be fine. If your friend checked no, but he still registered then he will also be fine, they will just change his answer at the interview. If your friend was not a green card holder before turing 26, but instead was in some other status, like F1 student, then he was not required to register. If you don't know if your registered (you may have done so in High School or college) then go the www.sss.gov and register.

Time to Apply - If you apply any earlier than 4 years and 9 months after becoming a permanent resident, then your application will be rejected, no exceptions, and you will loose your $400. (unless you are married to a US citizen. In that case it is 2 yrs 9 months IF you have been married for a full 3 yrs and your spouse has been a citizen for a full 3 yrs)

Please get these things straight, and don't trust just anyone that thinks they can answer on Sajha. (Except me, I happen to know what I am talking about)
