Hello All,

I was informed that if one flies Cathay Pacific from US to Hong Kong and take Dragon Air to Kathmandu, one does not need to get HK transit visa even though one’s F-1 visa has expired and need to have his/her H-1 stamped.

Has anyone flown Cathay to HK and took Dragon air to KTM without a transit visa and a valid return or non expired visa to US? Just want to make sure before I go ahead and book my flight.

Thanks a lot!

your ques. conflicts, on first one you asked one’s F-1 visa has expired and the next one you asked non expired visa to US? anyway, you do't need transit visa as long as you are travelling from US or western countried. They don't care if you going to nepal, but coming back to US, U must have a valid visa/papers. Good luck

Thanks bishal123!

I said "without" in the second one although I do not promise sanity on Friday nights. I thought it was the law that Nepalese should have transit visa in HK regardless (except when we fly Cathy & Dragon to go back). Thanks once again.

Any more info guys?

Would that help? Consider it my Saturday afternoon charity.

BTW, sometimes it is just easier to Google info than Sajha it. At least you get accurate info through Google.

You may visit Hong Kong Immigration Department website:

http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm#note%20for%20visa%20req

But, there are contradictory information there for Nepalese passport holders:

Nepal belongs to following catagories:

1. Always require VISA, except in direct transit by air and when the person does not leave the airport transit area

2. All nationals (except holders of Diplomatic and Official passports) are required to hold a valid visa for the HKSAR for whatever purpose (including those who are in transit and remain on the airside).

Thanks Axara and Satya!

Axara - I did my due diligence, trust me. I even saw those links. However, like Satya mentioned, the information is contradictory if you would check the link that Satya posted. It states Nepalese should have a valid visa regardless. As such, I wanted to hear if someone has “actually” flown that rout without valid visa on their way to Nepal.

I would not hesitate to open my arms for more charity, day and time notwithstanding.

Anyone? Please.

I think It's hard to find somebody whose visa is expired and flew to Nepal via Hongkong from US. Travelling with expired visa means he/she not coming back to US or got deported. I don't think anybody would dare to go to Ktm with expired visa, unless he/she wanna stay there in nepal.

Bishal123 – I think I was not clear enough while explaining my scenario. I did not mean the person being out of status. I meant the visa is expired (when I came to US long time back, they used to stamp 1 year visa for F-1). Now I am in H1 but I do not have my status stamped in my passport. As you may know, one can be in status but may not have the valid visa (in the passport) to go back and forth from US to home country to US. So I am traveling for vacation and want to get my H1 stamped while coming back. In the meantime, the visa issued in my PP is expired. Tyo hisab le bhaneko maile!

Hope this helps.

I am not an expert on this. My suggestion is, get stamped in your passport before  you leave the country. Without stamped passport,  you may not have problems at US airport but you may face prolems at Nepalese airport and Hongkong airport cause they can't lookup  your status on their computer. good luck

Porcupine - rest assured I shall always be there obligingly. BTW, unless there are very compelling reasons for you to be at HK or fly Cathay or DragonAir, have you looked at other routes? Like you say, your experience in this instance could be a resource for others (me included) in future.

Cheers

Axara – I did try to inquire about other routes – however I have not received much information on those. Perhaps they do not have a quote for now (one agent mentioned to me).

Upon further inquiry with another agency, they "reconfirmed" that we do not need a transit visa for HK and they have already sent quite a few personnel via that rout. Again, if someone who has done it can confirm this - that would be great J

If anyone else has more info, please let us know. Also, any suggestions on other routes that doesn’t require transit visa would be awesome.

 Many thanks!

i think you're safe. i don't think you require a HK transit visa if you fly dragon air from ktm-hk or vice versa. they had advertised in the nepali papers regarding this. on the way back from ktm, you must have H1B visa stamped on your pp. without that, they'll definitely not let you board at TIA. make sure you carry all your H1B approval letters at all times. posted below is a portion of the news release from dragon air website. i think it applies both ways. maybe you can call cathay office in usa?

"Welcoming the passengers on the first flight, Mr Rick Symington, Manager – Bangladesh & Nepal said that the new flights will also enable travellers from Nepal to connect to the extensive networks of Dragonair and Cathay Pacific, with visa-free transit to destinations in North Asia, Australia and North America on flights of the two airlines. "Indeed we have already seen an encouraging market response to our services," he added."

I am flying Cathay/ Dragonair on the 15th of June. I do not need a transit visa as per the new rules, that is what I was also told by the travel agent I got the tickets from.

Bon Voyage - Kaynish1

I chose to go with Cathay and Dragon too.
