Does anybody have any news regarding Nepali UN peacekeepers? There has been news of 100s of UN peacekeepers missing and their respective countries are confirming the cases.

My brother is there as well. He sent an one-liner email last night 8 hrs after the quake, saying he and his friends were safe . He was also successful in sending a SMS to his wife. Thats it. No updates after that.

Nepalese Forces serving in Haiti with the UN have all been accounted for and are safe except for some minor injuries. The Nepalese forces include Army troops from 2 Battalions, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personel. The Nepalese forces are deployed away from Port au Prince, the epicenter of the quake, so did not have major casaulties. Due to the quake, as one can imagine, communications is down in most Nepalese UN posts but they are working to fix the problem. Some troops have been used in the rescue efforts. Phone lines are still out, however, internet connection has resumed. Nepalese UN post buildings did not collapse (most of them) as majority of them are only one story temporary use building, are new, and are in the areas not near PAP. But the quake was felt across the country and the ground shoke as never seen before. Thats the update so far.

The World's Most Earthquake-Vulnerable Cities (Forbes): Kathmandu, Nepal, ranked first in the 2001 study, followed by Istanbul, Turkey; Delhi, India; Quito, Ecuador; Manila, Philippines; and Islambad/Rawalpindi, Pakistan--all of which could expect fatalities in the tens of thousands if disaster struck. The only first-world cities on the list were in Japan: Tokyo, Nagoya and Kobe. Fatalities in these cities were estimated in the hundreds, not thousands. Port-au-Prince was not on the list. See. Are we and our loved ones prepared?

Yes, sadly, this is one concern that we all should seriously think about: a possible earthquick in Nepal?? Kathmandu is very much similar to Port-au-Prince (PAP) in many aspects. Both the cities are overly crowded (population has sky rocketed and is much more than the city is designed to handle in terms of service to be provided, medical needs, security, food and so on); many unsecured and old structures or "kachha" houses attached to one another or very closely built to one another; poor government and unstability. God forbid, if anything like this or even similar to this rocks KTM, there will be huge casaulty, and rescue missions will be hard to conduct. So, people need to be educated about what to do and how to respond to, and be prepared (just in case) to combat a natural disaster like this.
