I'm planning to go to Kathmandu soon. When i checked out the prices of round trip ticket, it was seriously less traveling through Delhi. But i have heard all kind of stuffs about the problems faced by nepali people travelling through Delhi. Is it a worthwhile to travel through Delhi to Kathmandu or its just nonsense people talking about. I know India has changed a lot and its not the same it was 10 yrs ago. I hope people gonna help me in this case.
Thank you Hari Bahadur

I heard the officers at Delhi airport take your passport and go out of sight, leaving you scratching your head whether to panic or just rest assured that s/he will be back with it. Eventually the person does return with your passport after processing, I heard. But it can be an unsettling experience when someone disappears with our passport for a while even if it is done for legitimate reason.

I don't know what happened with all those who talks they have heard all sorts of troubles. But my recent experince too, was very good. I went to ktm from london via delhi. The only problem i saw was u have to claim ur luggage and wait outside until 3 hours from ur departure time to ktm. The ppl were very helpful inside the airports, specially those couple of quities in uniforms. I found a nice nepali kanch in resting/lounge area who was very helpful and kind, and alos offered me some money when i was just left with dollars ( i didn't took it, i excahnged the dollars). The guy at the bar was nice too ( may be becuase i tip him good money). spend 5 hours watching songs @ bar and kingfishers beer. I think ppl just make big issue when once in a while some one gets random check or something. so I say go for it.

I travelled Via Delhi last year, I had no choice but to stay one night there and fly to KTM next day. It was a good experience. Do the formalities about exit,Claim your luggage, pass the green line, take the paid up taxy and go to the hotel. The next morning, just the reverse, luggage checking in the xray, just like in US. Delhi Airport is changed and managed by young and energatic personnel. i was cautious of everything and inquired about how I had to go out of the terminal and even how to take a paid up taxy. I had doubt even the taxy driver will take commision when he drops out there at the hotel as our Nepalese guys do in KTM. But later I knew Hotels there do not need to give any commion as they are full most of the times. It was late night around 11 at the old Delhi(Fatehpuri) to figure it out the location of the Hotel i used to live long time ago, two police peronnel came to us to the parked taxy and asked what we were doing at that period of time( it was 11 o,clock at night).... we explained everything and they asked me to accompany them so that they will show us the holet nearby. I was hasitant to leave the cab, but the driver accompanied them and returned in a while finding the hotel......I had to giveRs. 100 more to the driver for he has to wait and drive back and forth to find the hotel..... then we stayed at the hotel there that night. The next morning going to the airport, i asked a question to the other taxy driver about the chances whether the driver of the taxy and the police personnel had got some commission for showing us the Hotel. The driver replied the Hotel are all booked most of the time and do not need to give any commission and Fatehpuri, at old Delhi ,was the most safest area to live.

Hari Bahadur Ji...
Trust me...please don't go through Delhi. It's better to invest couple hundred more than travelling through Delhi in Air India. Everything was fine until I landed Delhi. Delhi is such a mess. They try to rip you off. I didn't get my luggage in Kathmandu and had to fill up that luggage proprietary form and there was no sign of baggage for like 10 day...and after continuous effort calling and going through the Air India office in kathmanudu I got it back...Thank god I was lucky..but don't go through india. Air India is ok but going through India is not good..

I would say 50/50...experience I had to quarrel with the airlines staff at Delhi on my way to KTM b/c of the weight of my luggage. Apparently, the weight limit is different for the Delhi to KTM flight. My luggage was passed from the US for the Delhi flight. The weight of my luggage was exactly what they allow here (don't remember the limit though). However, before boarding the flight to KTM from Delhi, they were asking me for more money for the extra weight I have in my luggage as the Delhi to KTM has lower weight limit. I ended up fighting with them and not paying, but it was a hassle. I had to talk to a lot of managers before I was let on board for the KTM flight. They were not willing to give me my boarding pass if I didn't pay for the extra weight. I would say, only if you can fight when they try to give you unnecessary hassle, take the Delhi route. After all, it is cheap. BTW, when I opened my suitcase when I reached Nepal, a brand new cell phone was missing from its box. Not sure if this happened at Delhi or in Nepal though. Same thing happened with a guy who I met on the plane on my way back to Newark. His weight was passed at KTM. He had a couple of extra pounds in his luggage though. Continental crew tried to stop him at Delhi and asked for more money. Poor guy was threatned and told that he would be sent back to KTM if he didn't pay. I stayed with him and fought for him. With two of us fighting against their policy they finally handed the guy's boarding pass saying that the travel agent who booked his ticket paid for the extra weight. What a lie...I even filed a complaint after I came to the US but all they did was apologized for the inconvenience and mentioned that different airlines have different weight policy and it was legitimate for them to charge for the extra luggage. Anyways, guys....help everyone create a better experience in the future....do not just pay if they ask you for some money. I know it is easier just paying a couple of extra bucks than to deal with the hassle, but it is not right. Let us all fight together in such cases so that such activities by these mofos get discouraged in the airport. Fight for it. I know they will try to threaten you saying they will send you back to where you came from but its all BS. They can't do shit. I experienced it first hand , both ways, to and from Nepal. Do not just pay the fees and pamper these mofos.

To travel Nepal is so difficult because of these so called democratic party leaders. At the time of Panchayat RNAC used to get the best airlines of the year award,it used to have 29 Air craft in total including 2 boing 757 and two 727.After the Jan Andolan-1 Girija putri sold two 727 jet since then RNAC started to go down hill.RNAC used to get 30 tickets revenue for KTM-LON sector bothway for the British Gurkha Army from British Ministry Of Defence which was awarded to Qatar Airways by UML's So called communist avition minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal(present Home minister). He awrded qatar Air to make KTM its hub without charging any royalty.where as I remember Thai air used to pay $25/passenger to pick and drop calcutta to/from KTM in the route Bangkok-Calcutta-Ktm route. In a embassy party Mr bekh bahadur Thapa(that time he was ambassador to India) told us how these Ministers ask khulleaam GHOOS. When RNAC stopped its European flights due to lack of aircraft NorthWest Airlines Vice President approached Mr Thapa that Northwest Air will give a wide bodied Aircraft to RNAC in return they just want to fly with code sharing .Mr thapa went to Ktm with Vice president to see aviation minister Mr Gachhedar and american just came back with anger because Mr Gachhedar ask khaire what will be his share accepting free aircraft.Couple of years ago when foreign ministry was in UML's Bhagma so Makune came to London With ghoos/comission expert Bhim bahadur Rawal to arrange the sale of first ever South asian Embassy in London which is a pride for all of us, Nepalese Embassy in LONDON for the bhag shanti jai nepal.I go to Nepal twice a year because of gulf and Qatars staffs attitude problem I go to Nepal via Delhi .Delhi air porport has been changed due to privatsation. There are 49 international airline including American an European serving Delhi Normaly I fly to Bagdogra from Delhi because I'm from Biratnagar. From Bagdogra to Biratnagar is only 150KM roughly 100miles.which is very cheap way to travel for me from London. At least India is a Democratic country and there is rule of Law.Even Indira Gandhi was defeated in the Court by a fuche neta Raj narain when she was PM and had to resign where as there is no rule of law in the mid.eastern countries in today's Kantipur you can read thousands of Nepali workers are coming back to nepal without pay for 10 months . At last in my experience after working and living in the Uk with Arabi and Paki for last 25 years I am convinced and be grateful to god that our southern neighbour is India not Pakistan otherwise we would have became new East Pakistan with chanting Allah-ho-Akbar.

Morange, I am not against India. Truly, I don’t care. However, lately they have increased their interest in Nepal, citing more Islamic and Chinese activities in Nepal. However, I think all that is just a pretix to keep us backward like their third class citizens). The so called jana andholan of 1990 was staged by India and carried out by Indians (Girija, Makune, Raw et. all). Indian government has always been against Nepalese progress and they have tried all intimidations like closing petrol supply, not giving even a small piece of land for a port near Calcutta, not even letting us increase our trade through Bangladesh by not letting us use their small stretch of land (I hear its just 50 kms between Nepal and Bangladesh); finally not scrapping Sugaulai treatty, in spite numerous requests. Having said that, how can we believe that RAW was not involved in killing of King Birendra? They were very active at spreading the rumors that Gyanendra did it. RAW is/was very active in Kathmandu. Finally, they protected Maoists on Indian soil for more than 10 years. Paid their medical bills, gave them food and kept them alive and well to kill more Nepalese citizens and at the same time making sure that Nepalese army would never be in a position to fight them by limiting the arms and ammunition that comes from India and not allowing foreign countries (US and UK) to donate either. Personally, I don’t see progress for Nepal, till we 1) get rid of Indian/Chinese politicians from Nepal. 2) Moreover, its in our best interest to support Indian Maoists like India supported Nepalese Maoists. It would be nice to see India divided into many parts so that we could finally see reduced influence. 3) Its also in our best interest to support anti China activist so that Tibet gets freed, and therefore less Chinese influence.

I also had travelled recently(Dec-Jan) to KTM via Delhi. It was by JET AIRWAYS. The flight was from JFK to Brussels-Delhi-KTM. I checked in luggage at JFK and picked KTM airport. At Delhi, DO NOT GO TO EXIT or IMMIGRATION CHECK LINE. LOOK FOR AIRLINES AGENT. They will record your names and check the ticket and baggage claim ticket. FOLLOW THE AGENT. Then they take you to the transit lounge. All passengers travelling to Nepal should stay whole night in the transit because the flight to Nepal is in the morning. But there are some chairs suitable to sleep and strech your legs (though you can not sleep as they make announcement every minute). So going to Nepal is usual. But there is something different while returing as most of friends mentioned. Return flight: I checked in the luggage at KTM airport. They also gave the boarding passes all the way to JFK (it was in Royal Nepal Airlines pad, (must be old left)) without barcode. Boarding pass works only upto Delhi and should have barcode onward. AGAIN at Delhi airport, the airlines agent record your passport #, baggage ticket and takes you to the same transit lounge. I did not need to worry about baggage. There was almost like 8 hour transit at night. Yes, agent comes and takes your passport. I knew that from other friends, so it was not a horror story for me. There were 6 nepalese travelling. We asked the name of the agent before giving the passport. In an hour, he brought back the passport and new boarding pass with barcode and some baggage tag (you need to put the babbage tag in each handbags with your name and get stamped in the security check). In the meantime they also gave dinner box. The food was very hot (marich ko piro), I ate all though. CHECK YOUE BOARDING TIME and GATE. After security check i boarded in time and landed at JFK. The ticket price was cheaper via Delhi, transit was longer.
